The kind of artificial ego promoted by the system of Patriarchy and capitalism is appropriate to the capitalist market economy but not to the potential of the species for spirituality and peaceful interaction. Substance abuse is perhaps functional to this artificial ego type, and provides it with the illusory rewards to which it is addicted. In order to heal from addictions we need to heal from Patriarchal Capitalism and the values of self interest and domination it imposes. We need to create egos that are open to communication and community.
Dismantling the 'exchange ego' is healing for the indiviual and the society. However a different context with different expectations are necessary for creating this. 12 step programs are helpful in this sense. They provide a community which lacks some of the ego orientation of the market economy while also diminishing its opposite, a disadaptive over-giving ego.
Not surprisingly alcohol is called 'spirit'. It causes mood changes like those which accompany positive experiences of communication and community. Physiologically alcohol causes a rise in serotonin and dopamine levels. Similarly rises in serotonin and dopamine have been shown to accompany altruistic behavior.
Perhaps it is possible then that addictions mimic the brain chemistry of altruism without the practice?
In a new book, Why Good Things Happen to Good People, Stephen Post, says that people who undertake altruistic behavior as adolescents have greater health and success as adults than those who do not.A society based on the maternal values of a gift economy could plan teen age education in this sense. In fact such a societyy would acknowledge the important place free giving has in our psychological and social make up and create a need satisfying economy and community. This kind of society would permit such large scale addictions as the addiction to oil to be understood as greed for transformation of the free gift of the Earth into individual profit (the monetary "chemical payoff", and healed.
